Accessories in Metal Detecting

Article by Viv James

I recently sold a tin that contained candies, which I bought about a month ago. I sold it to a woman who paid 10 dollars for it because she was collecting tins from this particular brand of candy and my one had a famous cartoon character on the side of it. On one particular night I was getting rather bored and actually took a rest on the sand whilst the others continued detecting. Whilst sitting in the sand I started sifting with my hands and out popped a 24 carat gold necklace. I was hooked.

When you think of treasure hunting, maybe gold coins and precious stones come to mind, but it doesn’t end there. You can start in your own attic to see what treasures you find. Then you can check out some of the more unusual ways to go treasure hunting. The bottom line is that if you want to take up the hobby to purely make money – the odds are against you. If you want to take a hobby and meet all interesting people, go on digs or dives together, have frills of finding Gold and Silver, Old and New…………..with the chance of finding that one off find, then join the hobby. It has a lot to offer.

Several years ago, I treasure-mapped a trip to California. My husband and I were newly weds with debts from former marriages. There was no way that I could purchase the air-fare to California. After I treasure-mapped my trip, I actually won a contest and received the round trip ticket to California in the mail!

Who Else Wants to Know About Some Accessories in Metal Detecting?

Metal detectors are not an all-for-one device. This means that metal detectors cannot exist alone. They need some metal detecting accessories to facilitate or expedite the detection process. If you want to pursue your dream as a treasure hunter or you simply adore finding rare and valuable metals hidden beneath the earth’s surface, investing in a good set of metal detectors and accessories for metal detecting is important. This will guarantee your search will be more positive and more valuable findings.

However, not all accessories in metal detecting are the same. Hence, it is important that you know these items so that you can easily identify them as you encounter them in the market.

1. Books about metal detecting

You need to have a wide array of good metal detecting books. Experts say that nearly 90% of successful people in metal detecting are well adept and knowledgeable of the process. Hence, they say that one of the most important tools in order to succeed in metal detecting is knowledge. And you can only gain it through metal detecting books and experience.

2. Digging tools

To treasure-map a spouse or special companion, concentrate on finding pictures that represent what you want the relationship to look like: how you want to be treated, what you will do together what values you would share, etc.

Although you may not realize it, metaphorically the Publishers Clearing House comes by your door every morning, and every day you have the winning lottery ticket. How is this possible? Well, within you there already exists a treasure chest. It is filled with the priceless jewels of your own positive memories and your capacities to achieve positive states of being.

Walk-through metal detectors are most common in airports, hotels, government buildings, and other public places. They are designed to detect razor blades, weapons and microprocessor chips. They come with superb discrimination, excellent target selection, high throughput, low false alarm rate, uniform detection within the entire archway, and a bi-directional system.

Our city collects large junk for free during a week each spring. We see good bicycles, furniture, games, toys, chairs, and more, in front of almost every house. Several people come with trucks and trailers to pick out things to sell at flea markets or auctions. It’s a regular source of income for some of them. I’m sure this happens in other cities too.

Corporate teams will spend the entire day in wandering to every possible locations and comparing the sites with the given photographs. In this event, each team has to take photographs, which should be similar to the given photographs. You need these tools to retrieve your metal detecting finds, such as nuggets, coins, relics, and jewelry items. Never use your bare hands or any other tools not created for digging. You may only damage your metal detecting finds.

3. Harness

To lighten up the burden of carrying your metal detector, try using a harness. You can find a good harness for every type of metal detector.

4. Plug popper

In order to retrieve rings and coins without denting or scratching the turf, try to use a plug popper. This will enable you to remove clogged coins or any metal detecting finds without having to damage your turf.

5. Sand baskets

If you are into beach metal detecting, it is best that you have sand baskets to facilitate the process. Since the sand is made of very tiny particles, it will be hard to find coins beneath the layers. Hence, to retrieve jewelry and coins easily and fast, try to use a sand basket

6. Headphones

You need these items to enable you to hear even the faintest sound of a target. With them you will never miss a find, so have a good set of headphones with you. All of these things are specially built to expedite your metal detecting process. You can never start your metal detecting activity without these items. Otherwise, you have to settle for alternatives, which create a greater risk of damaging your finds or your metal detector device.

Get ready for the hunt of the season. If you have an energetic and adventurous corporate team with a limited budget, then GSP treasure hunt in Derbyshire is just the right thing for you.

Even with the best scoops available, it is sometimes very difficult and frustrating to try to recover targets at the edge of the surf. Find out more about metal detectors at metal detector info site. But there are plenty of things people have overlooked that with some time and imagination can be objects of beauty in your home.

Americans treasure their past, which is one reason antiques are so popular. Antiques are relics of a time now gone. We look back on our history with pride. Furniture, jewelry, even automobiles that were in common use many years ago, are prized antiques today, simply because of the era they came from.

You might find iron debris, broken potteries and glassware which could be the best location to find older items and perhaps even novelty coins, jewelries, watches, relics and other possible collectibles. Go where people gather together during the busy season, local beaches, town beaches, old marinas, and ocean beaches are most likely the prime spot for buttons, bullets, sinkers, Indian artifacts, old charms, and ornaments. Gold Mining: How Do We Get Gold Out of the Ground

Gold Mining: How Do We Get Gold Out of the Ground

Article by Ron Peterson

The precious metal of gold has fascinated humans for thousands of years. But how do we actually get it out of the ground? Let’s take a look at the most common ways to mine gold.

There are two main gold mining methods, one is called “placer” and the other is “vein” mining. And another type of mining is when gold is collected as a by-product in the mining of other metals.

Placer Mining

Placer mining is practiced when the metal is found in unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel from which the gold can be easily separated because of its high density. The sand and gravel suspended in moving water. Much heavier metal sinks to bottom and is separated by hand.

The simplest method of placer mining is panning. Here the miner swirls the mixture in a pan rapidly enough to carry the water and most of the gravel and sand over the edge while the gold remains on bottom. This was the classic method used by the Forty-Niners during the California gold rush of 1849 and has been immortalized in story, art, and song.

A more efficient form of placer mining uses a sluice box, a U-shaped trough with a gentle slope and transverse bars firmly attached to the trough bottom.

The bars — extending from side to side — catch the heaviest particles and prevent them from washing down the slope.

Sand and gravel are placed in the high end, the gate to a water supply is opened, and the lighter material is washed through the sluice box and out the lower end. The materials are caught behind the bars and are gleaned to recover gold.

Another variation of placer mining is called hydraulic mining. A very strong stream of water is directed at natural sand and gravel banks washing away the lighter materials. The suspended materials treated as if they were in giant sluice box.

Currently the most important placer technique is dredging. A huge shovel of several cubic meters capacity lifts the unconsolidated sand and gravel from soil and mud and the placer process starts.

Vein Mining

Vein, or lode mining is the most important of gold recovery methods. Each ounce of gold recovered requires the processing of about 100,000 ounces of ore. Much gold is deposited in rock veins and this method accounts for more than half world’s total gold production. Gold in veins may be of microscopic particle size, in nuggets or sheets, or in gold compounds. The ore requires extensive extraction and refining.

One-third of all gold is produced as a by-product of copper, lead, and zinc production. Copper must be electrolytically refined to raise its purity from 99% to the more than 99.99% that is required for many industrial purposes.

In the refining process an anode of impure copper is electrolyzed in a bath in which the cathode is a very thin sheet of highly refined copper. This process

creates anode sludge which contains gold in quantities sufficient to make its recovery profitable. One-third of all gold is obtained from such by-products.

Silver and platinum are also recovered from the copper anode sludge in quantities large enough to more than pay for the total refining process.

Extraction, Refining and Uses of Gold

Ore from the gold mine is first crushed in rod or ball mills. This process reduces the ore to a powdery substance. The gold is then extracted by amalgamation with mercury or by placer procedures. Approx. 70% is recovered at this point.

The remainder is then dissolved in dilute solutions of sodium cyanide or calcium cyanide. The addition of metallic zinc to these solutions causes metallic gold to precipitate. This precipitate is refined by smelting and the purification is completed by electrolysis. The sludge produced in this process will also contain commercial quantities of silver, platinum, osmium, and other rare-earth metals.

Gold is one of the first two or three metals, along with copper and silver that was used by humans in these metals’ elemental states. Because of its poor chemical reactivity it was found uncombined and required no knowledge of refining. Gold was used in decorative arts before 9000 BC. And civilizations prized gold for its beauty.

A principal use of gold today is as a currency reserve. For centuries gold was used directly as currency along with silver. During the 19th century, gold assumed the role as the sole basis of the currencies of most nations. Paper money was directly convertible into gold.

World War I, however, disrupted the “gold-standard” system. The original gold standard was gradually abandoned. The United States stopped minting gold coinage in 1934 and the dollar eventually emerged as the principal unit of international monetary transactions.

Since the 1970s, gold has been bought and sold on the world market, with widely fluctuating prices. Today gold reserves maintain only a very indirect relationship with currency values. However, as gold has declined as a currency reserve, its use in industrial processes has risen. On top of this, its beauty and workability continue to give gold an important role in the world’s jewelry industry.

Gold Mining On The Yuba River The Ancient American River, Ancient Yuba River, Ancient Calaveras River, Ancient Mokelumne River, Ancient Tuolumne River, Ancient Magalia Channel, Ancient Intervolcanic Cateract Channel, Ancient Intervolcanic American River and the Ancient Jura River (from the Jurassic Period), are plotted in detail on Big Tens California Gold Map 5. The present-day rivers bearing the same names as their ancient rivers are also shown. The Ancient Rivers of Gold in northern California are from the Tertiary Period. The Tertiary rivers existed millions of years ago and many of them had large quantities of gold within their gravels. Because of that, they are known as the “Ancient Rivers of Gold.” Each ancient river is discussed below. Information on this page is based on the classic work of Waldemar Lindgren of the United States Geological Survey and by study of Big Tens California Gold Map 5, which shows the relationship of the ancient rivers to landmarks, such as roads, creeks and towns in the region. These now-dry Tertiary rivers are thought to be a prime source of the gold found in many of the rivers and streams of the Mother Lode region of northern California. The ancient rivers are discontinuous and sometimes follow tortuous routes. They have been altered by volcanic activity, erosion, and in some instances portions of the rivers have been covered by lava. Much of the region underwent extreme volcanic eruptions. Volcanic flows have been found up to 4000

The 49 ' ers and the California Gold Rush-ways to find gold

The first gold rush people to rush to the gold fields, beginning in the spring of 1848, were the residents of California themselves, especially Americans and Europeans living in Northern California, along with native Americans and some Californios (Spanish-speaking Californians).

Word of the gold rush spread slowly at first. The earliest gold rush-asylum seekers to arrive in California during 1848 were people who lived near California, or people who heard the news from ships on the fastest sailing routes from California. The first gold rush groups of Americans to arrive were several thousand Oregonians who came down the Siskiyou Trail. Next came people from Hawaii, by ship, and several thousand Latin Americans, including people from Mexico, from Peru and from as far away as Chile, both by ship and overland. By the end of 1848, some 6,000 Argonauts came to California gold rush. Only a small number (probably less than 500) traveled by land from the United States that year. Some of these "forty-Eighters," as they were sometimes called, were able to collect large quantities of easily accessible gold — in some cases, thousands of dollars worth each day. Even ordinary prospectors averaged daily gold finds worth gold rush ten to fifteen times the daily wage of a laborer on the East Coast. A person could work for six months in the gold rush gold fields and find the equivalent of six years ' wages back home.

By the beginning of 1849, Word of the Gold Rush had spread across the globe, and an overwhelming number of gold rush-seekers and traders began to come from virtually every continent. The largest group in 1849 were Americans, arriving by the tens of thousands overland the continent and along various sailing routes. Australians and New Zealanders picked up the news from ships carrying Hawaiian newspapers, and thousands, infected with "gold rush fever," boarded ships for California. Forty Niners-came from Latin America, particularly from the Mexican mining districts near Sonora. Gold rush-seekers and merchants from Asia, primarily from China, began arriving in 1849, at first in modest numbers to "Gold Rush mountain," the name given to California in Chinese. The first immigrants from Europe, against the effects of the revolutions of 1848 and with a longer distance to travel, began arriving in late 1849 reeling, mainly from France, with some Germans, Italians and British.

It is estimated that nearly 90,000 people arrived in California gold rush in 1849 — about half by land and half by sea. Of these, perhaps 50,000 to 60,000 were Americans, and the rest were from other countries. By 1855 it is estimated at least 300,000 gold rush-seekers, merchants and other immigrants had arrived in California from all over the world. The largest group continued to be Americans, but there were tens of thousands each Mexicans, Chinese, French, and Latin Americans, together with many smaller groups of miners, such as Filipinos and Basques. A modest number of miners of African ancestry (probably less than 4,000) was from the American South, the Caribbean and Brazil come for the gold rush.  http://prospectminingforgold.com

Ethical Gold Mining; The Social and Environmental Future of the Mining Industry

Article by Investorideas.com

Soltera Mining Corp. (OTCPK: SLTA) reports agreement with Goldlake Group, a world leader in the production of natural/ethical gold

July 19, 2010 â?” (Investorideas.com mining stocks newswire) http://www.InvestorIdeas.com and its leading mining investor portals, reports on developments in the mining sector and the growing demand for “ethical gold”.

With the oil and gas industry hit hard by the BP oil spill, the biggest environmental disaster in history, the mining sector is also facing pressure to meet environmental and ethical standards and a new breed of mining companies may emerge. Ethical gold is now becoming a new buzz phrase- and investors can expect to hear more about it.

Frequent contributor to Investorideas.com and other financial sites, Jon Nadler, Senior Analyst at Kitco Metals Inc. (www.kitco.com) recently wrote about ethical gold mining in his July 14th column, “The Other Price of Gold”. Jon reports “”No Blood Diamonds” is a slogan for the times. Perhaps “No Dirty Gold” should have an equal billing, five years after the establishment of the organization bearing the same name. After all, how many gold buyers are aware that a single wedding ring’s production entails the generation of 20 tonnes (that’s 44,000 lbs.) of waste?”Full column: http://www.investorideas.com/news/mining/7141.asp

Soltera Mining Corp. (OTCPK: SLTA) is company that is shifting with the ethical gold trend and has recently announced key developments. Dr. Fabio Montanari, President and CEO of Soltera Mining announced June 23rd that Soltera signed an agreement with Goldlake Group, a world leader in the production of natural/ethical gold from alluvial deposits in Honduras, Central America. The first objective of the agreement is to develop eluvial gold production from the El Torno property in northern Argentina. This agreement has strategic value for both companies because on the one hand, it enables Soltera Mining to continue pursuing its goals of exploring and developing its flagship gold project El Torno through partnership with a mining entity with a solid reputation and, on the other hand, it allows the Goldlake Group to develop a new project concerned with the production of natural/ethical gold in line with the agreement to supply Cartier that has been active for one year.

June 23rd mining giant GOLDCORP INC. (TSX:G )(NYSE:GG) was in the midst of controversy as the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights, known as CIDH filed complaints and demanded the Guatemalan government suspend operations at Goldcorp Inc’s Marlin mine due to environmental and human rights violations. “They have to suspend operations,” Fernando Barillas, an adviser to Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom stated.

The company responded on June 30th with, ” GOLDCORP INC. (TSX:G)(NYSE:GG -) today presented its initial response to the recently completed independent human rights assessment (HRA) prepared by On Common Ground Consultants Inc. The report is the result of an eighteen month assessment of how the Marlin mine which is operated by Montana Exploradora de Guatemala, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Goldcorp, has affected human rights, and whether the Company has in place and is implementing effectively policies and procedures to mitigate the risks of potential conflicts with international human rights standards. “

About Soltera Mining Corp. (OTCPK: SLTA FRANKFURT: SN7):Soltera Mining Corp. is a unique exploration company in the sense that it is following two distinct lines of action. The first is conventional, with exploration concentrated on two carefully selected gold and base metal projects in Argentina, particularly the large-scale El Torno gold project in Jujuy. What is Gold Detecting?

Article by Jane Long

What is a gold detecting? Basically, it is the hunt for gold. Of course, this term is very broad and covers many different types of gold and methods of searching. It can mean anything from mining to trying to recover lost gold at sea to scouring the local playground for lost items. As a would be gold hunter, you have to narrow down the field to what it is that you intend to do and where it is that you plan to hunt. Before you buy any equipment, there are a few very basic things that you will have to do prior to heading out.

One thing that will be of benefit is to read metal detector reviews. Reading reviews will give you an idea about what you will need to find gold in the region where you plan to search and can provide you with invaluable information about the various detectors. These reviews can also provide you with tricks and tips that will help you make the best use of the detector. You will be able to read about what kind of machines are the simplest to operate and which ones are recommended for the beginner. Additionally, you can gain insight into the type of equipment available and which detectors are best suited to the region and type of hunting that you want to do.

Knowing the kind of gold that you want to find is a good place to start. Prospecting and gold detecting are not necessarily the same thing, and you have to know the difference if you want to be successful. Prospecting is the search for gold flakes and nuggets. This kind of venture will most often place you out in a wilderness location. You may be in the desert, the woods or the mountains. You are going to be exploring areas to find “new gold”. New gold is gold that has not been processed in any way. It is gold that is still in its natural state.

Searching or detecting for lost gold is trying to find items that are made from gold that have been lost. This is gold that will often have you looking in areas where many people frequent. You are going to be hunting for gold that has been processed and shaped. You may be looking for coins, and/or jewellery.

Looking for gold can be very profitable and fun. However, if you are new to the hobby, you’re going to need to learn about the equipment, and the products that you will need to ensure that you are going to be rewarded for your efforts. There are hundreds of detectors on the market, and each one has different abilities. There are detectors that are specially made to hunt in the desert and others that are capable of operating in the water. Each detector has a range or depth limit. Some detectors can locate extremely small flakes that are a foot underground while others may only be able to locate gold at a few inches below the surface.

Prior to buying any expensive piece of gold detecting equipment take the time to read some metal detector reviews. An accurate gold detecting description of the region and the type of gold that you want to hunt for will be the key to buying the ideal detector.

New prospectors – Gold prospecting survives the test of time

 LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas residents are striking it rich, and it’s happening nowhere near a casino. Amateur prospectors are using the desert to find a gold mine. The southwest is a place where brush and cactus rule the land, but there is something else that brings people to the barren land. It is a place that is so valuable, that we were asked to keep the exact location a secret. “I live, breathe, and prospect,” said former Las Vegas resident Doug Parker. Gold prospecting is an activity that hearkens back to the old days of the gold rush. Today, it is alive and well, miles from the Vegas strip. “I took over for my father, learned (prospecting) from him, and taught it to my kids,” Parker said. He has done the 9-5 job, working as a slot take at the Flamingo for 25 years. Now, Parker and his friends are looking for a new kind of jackpot. “We don’t like to gamble, but we like to do this,” said prospector Lorna Caldwell. “There’s gold out here all over the place,” Parker noted. The gold is found in small flakes, and believe it or not – large nuggets. In modern times, most gold enthusiasts prefer to go the easy way, using Cash for Gold, pawn shops, and even a vending machine located inside the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino. They all stake a claim in the expensive yellow metal. “A little bit of gold is worth a lot of money,” said Neil Sackmary, a graduate gemologist at Nevada Coin & Jewelry. Sackmary pointed out that many of his clients are prospectors. In fact, Nevada is responsible for 79% of all gold production in the United States. Most of that comes from mines in Northern Nevada, but there are hundreds of local prospectors and two clubs dedicated to the art: The Gold Searchers of Southern Nevada, and the Las Vegas chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America. The LVGPAA is so extensive, that it has 450 active members and monthly meetings. Most newcomers, however, are naive – or perhaps it’s just wishful thinking that they will find a fortune. “They all feel the same way, until they get out here and realize the reality of the thing,” Parker said. Each prospector has his or her own method for finding gold. Some use metal detectors, while others use a waterfall-like device called a sluice box. Doug Parker, however, uses a series of blowers, tubes, and racks of steel – called a dry wash. Once you find gold, it is easy to get hooked. “I got gold fever, bad!” said Mike Freese from St. Petersburg, FL. Decked out with his own pans and buckets, Freese comes to Las Vegas from the Sunshine State, hoping for a win he cannot get anywhere else. “I like the casinos, but I get tired of losing all the time,” Freese noted. Yet, the truth of the matter is that prospecting is not a get-rich-quick scheme and, except the retirees, few call it a career. “It’s real nice when it’s on TV, but when you get out here, you got to move quite a bit of dirt before you get that gold,” said Las Vegas prospector Charles Walker. “I’ve got a whole conglomerate of bottle caps, tin cans, wire, paper clips.” But it’s that lure of hitting the mother lode that makes gold prospecting a serious business. “My clients are really bloodthirsty for the gold,” said Sackmary. The spirit of the Wild West is still strong, and the best locations are already claimed… so claim jumpers beware. “Some places you can go in Nevada, they’ll shoot you, and ask questions later,” said Parker. But for LVGPAA members like Katherine Gonzales, who is still rather new to the craft, the desert is the place to be. “I think those people are priceless… all the people you meet. They’re the gold nuggets,” Gonzales said. Both the GSSN and LVGPAA are accepting new members. For details, visit the links on the right side of this page. Annual memberships range from $35-67.50. McCaw Elementary in Henderson is also home to the McCaw School of Mines, which teaches children about prospecting history. Anyone know what this gold mining tool is called? Or a website that carries it? The link is for a youtube video with the machine they use. Thanks for any help. http://youtube.com/watch?v=BENyhGCp9Vw

Answer by Willeke
As it is a home made machine it is called whatever they call it, I hear the name ‘gold panning machine’ being used, but I am not completely sure.

For a place to buy one, try sending a message to the people posting the movie, maybe they would like to make a little money by selling the tool.

As that proved the best way to get rich from gold-mining.
The miners stayed poor but the shop owners became the great men of the county.

$1,600 Gold! Maybe I Should Go Gold Prospecting Again at today’s prices!

114 $1,600 Gold! Maybe I Should Go Gold Prospecting Again at todays prices! price of gold

I spent my youth in the 40 ninth state of Ak. I was born in a small A-Frame design house in 1978. Within the 1980s my father used to get me gold prospecting around Talkeetna and Fairbanks. I came across it fascinating to discover sparkly gold flakes during my pan. I had been a precious metal prospector for life! Beginning in about 1988 my father began working for the actual Valdez Creek gold mine on the Old Denali Freeway. Next thing you know, he started buying five gallon buckets packed with dirt. What we were doing had been wrong, however it was very fun for me personally as an 14-year-old young man.

OK, I’ll move beyond the badness of me personally and my dad. Which in addition, he had been fired in 1989, though it had been for defeating up the foreman’s son. In the 1990's being a rare metal prospector was not since lucrative because it is becoming today. On Friday gold rates hit more than $ 1100 per ounce! In 2005, I had been invited to do business with a small family at a gold mining declare in a remote control section of highway near Healy, Alaska. My goodness were there mountains out there! Nevertheless, I discovered an opening up on a hillside. And when i was done for your day, I’d visit it and run a little sluice box inside the creek. I had to spend about four hours to get 1/5th of the ounce. In the event that gold hits $ 2,Thousand per ounce, which I believe it will – And soon. I then may all over again indulge personally in the create of the precious metal prospector. That 1/5th of the ounce regarding gold would be $ 400 each day! It’s easy to discover the skills regarding gold prospecting. At the most elementary, all you need is a gold pan, and a scoop. Heck, actually your hands is going to do. Gold is actually heavy, so all you do is throw something in to the griddle. Add h2o from the stream or whatever your water source will be. And then move/shake the pan in the circular action. The lighter in weight material will go to the top, and also gold to the bottom. It will be highly recommended to watch a few movies on how it functions for all you novices. Once you are done voila! Your a bona fide gold prospector ready to earn your stake. Each of the fifty states has gold. How obtainable gold lead generation will be to an individual, depending on your local area is another issue. But wherever you are, make certain you don’t trespass in another miner’s declare. They can acquire pretty crabby whenever other people are caught gold prospecting on their land. Good luck on your quest to strike it rich, and don’t forget to always utilize due diligence!

Gold Prospecting – A Way Of Life

Gold Prospecting – A Way Of Life

Article by Art Gib

This past year, my wife and I have taken up the hobby of gold prospecting. We’ve had a fair amount of success so far, sticking mainly to placer prospecting. A placer, which rhymes with gasser, is a sand bank in the middle of a river or stream, and a place where gold and other heavy metals naturally collect.

We pan at these places and are planning to add a dredge and a sluice to our equipment next year. A dredge is a giant vacuum, and can suck up the sand from a placer formation in a matter of minutes. The sluice can do in a matter of minutes what might take several hours with a pan, and we expect to find a lot more color this summer.

Once we have the gold extracted and cleaned, the next step is to take it to precious metal refiners and have it assayed. From that point, we can either have it set as bullion, have it crafted by a goldsmith, or sell it on the open market.

I know of people that can find an ounce or two a day, and for those folks, a hobby has become a great source of wealth. I have even heard the story of one man who goes prospecting for two days, finds enough to pay for all of his expenses, and spends the rest of his month in more lofty pursuits. That is a lifestyle I would love for my wife and family.

In finding a precious metal refiner, we are looking for someone who will allow us to be a part of the process. Part of this hobby is education, and we want to see how things happen every step of the way. If we choose to make something personal out of our finds, we want to work intimately with the goldsmith in creating a design, seeing the wax molds, watching the cast metal be smoothed, shaped, and polished, and the final creation slipped onto the finger or worn around a neck. All in all, it is fascinating, and something that has become a passion.

So, for the remainder of the winter months, we are reading, studying maps, and talking with our more experienced companions so that when the weather warms, we are up and running and finding that gold. One nice side effect is spending time in the great outdoors, and while I am not a huge fan of camping, I could really learn to love it, especially if Mother Earth decided to pay me in gold for it.

Are there any valuable world gold coins made of precious metals

Question by mugsy187: Are there any valuable world gold coins made of precious metals or older than 200 years?
I have a huge coin collection (couple hundred pieces) of foreign (non-US) coins. Someone just told me that the only coins like mine that are worth anything are the gold or precious-metal ones. I don’t have any of those, so are there any recent, rare world coins? Resources for world coins would also be appreciated.

Best answer:

Answer by R G
It would defeat the whole purpose of coins if they were worth more then there value. The only reason old coins are worth anything is because of their different composition of metal and the fact that they’re discontinued/ antique.

Alaska Gold Mining Bibliography

Today I’m posting a 1997 bibliography from the US Bureau of Mines that lists all of the reports, maps, and surveys that the BM had on Alaska mining.  I guess this is about the time that the Bureau of Mines was being shut down by Bill Clinton and most of the functions merged into the BLM.
I’m not sure if that was the last big government agency to be shutdown, but I can’t think of any other since then.
It’s not easy reading, but it’s a great research document.
So, take a look at the list-of-blm-docs-on-alaska-mining

Everything You Should Know About Locating Mining Claims

A large number of lands are still open to mineral location, but you should know where to find them.

If you’re a citizen of the United States, a corporation, or even a non-citizen Locating Mining Claimswho has declared your intention to become one, you can locate a mining claim.

A mining claim gives the holder the right to mine on federal land, while a patent gives him outright ownership of mineral-rich land that belongs to the federal government.

Federal lands can be determined from maps, however there are no maps representing mining claims.

A mining claim can be located on these lands which are open to mineral location. If you have a specific piece of land in mind and no active claims are shown on the county’s records, the land may then be open for staking.

Here is a pretty good Ebook put out by the Bureau of Land Management that will explain things better: BLM Mining Info.

Gold Rush: Alaska

Premieres Friday, December 3 2010 at 10PM ET/PT

Gold Rush: AlaskaFollows six men who, in the face of an economic meltdown, risk everything – their families, their dignity, and in some cases, their lives – to strike it rich mining for gold in the wilds of Alaska.

Inspired by his father Jack, Todd Hoffman of Sandy, Oregon, leads a group of greenhorn miners to forge a new frontier and save their families from dire straits.

While leasing a gold claim in Alaska, Todd and his company of newbies face the grandeur of Alaska as well as its hardships, including an impending winter that will halt operations and the opportunity to strike gold. In an effort to keep the operation running, the team takes fate into their own hands with a make or break venture that will change their lives forever.

After watching the steady decline of his aviation business in Oregon due to the stalled economy, Todd searched for new opportunities. With the price of gold on the rise, he came up with a plan to mine for the mineral in southeast Alaska, where there’s an estimated $250 billion worth of gold. The mystique of Alaska draws Todd to Porcupine Creek, the setting for GOLD RUSH: ALASKA, where his father Jack mined for three seasons in the 1980s before he nearly went bankrupt.

Todd and Jack look to their community in Oregon for a team of men to work the mines alongside them, knowing dire economic straits have hit those around them hardest. They have no financial means to pay them until – or unless – they find gold. It’s a risk, but with high unemployment in Oregon, there’s no shortage of interest. The assembled team includes: rookie Jimmy Dorsey, mechanical genius James Harness, foreman Greg Remsburg, and safety officer Jim Thurber.

The mine at Porcupine Creek is located in the heart of one of the last great wildernesses, where weather conditions can change in an instant. The claim is surrounded by the largest bald eagle population on earth, and a nearby river is the site of a year-round salmon run. Grizzly bears and moose sightings happen daily, and the team must be prepared for some seriously close encounters.

Armed with the hope and ferocity to rekindle the original American Dream, GOLD RUSH: ALASKA shines a spotlight on this group of enthusiasts. In essence, these are the new “’49ers,” going back to the roots this country was founded on: hard labor, blood, sweat and tears. The men risk everything in the biggest gamble of their lives, and the hunt is on to strike it rich – or in some cases, go bust.

Gold Mining In 2010

Like most grizzly bears this time of year I am slowly beginning to come out of my long winter hibernation.  I will be posting more gold treasure maps and other good information.

I think 2010 is going to be a good year for all of the part-time gold miners, because the price of gold has stayed high.

I’ll be posting something every week or two until I get tired or strike it rich.

If you have any specific things you want me to look into let me know.

Good Luck!

California Placer Mining

OK, some of my readers seem to believe that the documents I post are to obtuse for the average weekend gold miner.  I don’t tend to agree because the average weekend gold miner is probably an engineer, auto mechanic, or school teacher during the week, and none of this stuff is rocket science.  Also, you know that the weekend gold miners are smart, because they aren’t wasting there time playing golf.

Well, the document that I am posting this week placer-mining-california-doc-division-of-mines-and-geology is one that should be useful to almost every weekend gold miner whether you live in California or not.

This document is a very detailed thirty-seven page report on placer mining and from reading it you could pretty well go out and start washing dirt.  It has plans for sluice boxes and lot of other cool stuff.

Gold Mining In Alabama

Sweet Home Alabama!  Yes, there is gold to be found in Alabama.  According to this document by the Geological Survey of Alabama there 49,000 ounces of gold was reported through 1939 and probably at least that much more has been mined, but not reported.

This is a long document, but it’s worth your trouble to dig through it if you live in Alabama or somewhere nearby, particularly in Mississippi.   A lot of Alabama gold fields are in natural forests and that can also work in your favor.

Check it out!

Arizona Gold Strike of 1988

Here’s an interesting little post a gold strike in Arizona in 1988.

It only about two pages, but it is an interesting little piece and if you do any prospecting out there in the desert, which was never my cup of tea, it is worth looking at.

So take a look at: arizona-gold-strike-1988

Gold Mining In Idaho

Idaho is another state with a history of very strong gold production over the years.   Hopefully, by now it is beginning to get warm enough to do a little gold mining in Idaho.   One of the problems of prospecting in Idaho is that there is not always enough water, and a good gold detector is probably a good investment if you are really serious about gold prospecting in Idaho.

This is document about gold mining along the Snake River.  It is full of interesting information and it is definitely worth looking at if you are even thinking prospecting in Idaho.

Gold Mining Museums

As many of you know I’m a big believer that most of the significant gold is actually found during your research and museums are an often overlooked place to do research, particularly if you are stumped.  I have found that looking at museums often give me a better feel for a project than say just reading or searching for information online, because the museum displays give you both an overview of mining in a given region, but also specific details about mining techniques, equipment, and production that you may not have known.

More importantly, even if you know all of the information in the exhibits, seeing the information explain in visual form may help spark some ideas you had never considered about where you might want to prospect and other research ideas.

Also, some of the old gold mining equipment might really be useful to you, because the old timers used a variety of methods that we no longer use for a variety of reasons.  However, you might be able to use your equipment a little more effectively or perhaps decide to build a piece of your own gear.  Most of the old stuff tends to be heavier and harder to use, but it depends on your situation.

Anyhow, here is the link for Mining Museums
